Federal Employer Identification Number

A Federal Employer Identification Number or FEIN is used to identify a business entity. The FEIN is a nine-digit number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service for employment tax reporting purposes. Most businesses need to obtain an FEIN. A business is required to obtain an EIN if the business has employees, or if the business entity is a corporation or a partnership. A state tax identification number may also be required.

Businesses may need a new EIN if there are ownership changes, structure changes, or bankruptcy proceedings.
