Iowa Board of Pharmacy Creates 3 New License Types

Effective January 1, 2019, the Iowa Board of Pharmacy will split the Wholesale Drug Distributors License into 3 separate categories: Third-Party Logistics Providers (3PLs), Wholesale Distributors, and Limited Distributors. Businesses currently licensed as a wholesale drug distributor in Iowa should be aware that, based on their business activity, their license type and renewal fee may change.

Due to the timing of the rule change, the Board's 2019 renewal period for wholesale distributors will be moved back from 12/31/2018 to 3/31/2019. No action is required to claim the extended renewal deadline. All required licenses must be issued by the Board prior to April 1, 2019 in order to legally operate in Iowa after March 19, 2019.

The Board also announced that wholesale distributors and 3PLs licensed in Iowa must obtain accreditation with the National Association of Board of Pharmacy as a Verified Accredited Wholesale Distributor by the 2020 renewal deadlines. Failure to do so will result in nonrenewable of a license. A copy of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy's proposed rule change is available by clicking the link.
